What is Aadhar Card (UID Number)?
The Unique Identification Authority of India-UIDAI is a central government agency of India. It is under the ministry of communication and information technology Department. The objective of UIDAI is to collect the biometric and demographic data of Indian Citizens and store them in a centralized database to issue a 12-digit unique identity number called Aadhar Card (it’s also called as UID Number) to each resident. Note that Aadhar Number is Randomly Generated Number.
What is UID Number In Aadhar Card?
If you have an Aadhar Card you can see it has 12 Digit Numeric Number (EX. 1234 1234 1234 1234). Aadhaar is a random number which never starts with a 0 or 1.Thus it’s just a random number and doesn’t have any format. It’s a number linking your info which is stored in a government database. You can also Call it DigiLocker where You can store your Data yourself like All Educational Certificate, ID Cards by Scanning.
Significance of 12 Digits in Aadhar Card
In Aadhar Card UID number was intended to be only numeric not alpha-numeric (Means only Nuber No Special Character like @,#,$, etc) so that people require minimal literacy (number knowledge only) to remember their UID numbers. (Because Digits are Easy to Remember than Special Characters.)
Any personally-identifying information (such as date of birth & Name) was intentionally not used in the number in order to prevent any fraudulent activity or in any way guessing the background of a person from his/her Aadhar number. This was the reason why the first 11 digits were made Random.
UID numbers need to be unique as well. The random number generation part of the algorithm can produce duplicates – For an Example let’s say one in a few thousand and with no real predictable frequency. So, it performs a uniqueness check-in post-processing the generated numbers. This uses a file-based unique index and it also had an alternate bit-array based implementation to do this. Other additional filters that run in the post-processing stage also includes logic to remove/reject “nice” looking numbers.
Have you ever wondered why no one gets UID numbers with repeating sequences? The reason we did this was to ensure no one even attempts an entitlement route to get special numbers. The randomness and democracy of number allocation don’t end here. Even the allocation to enrollments that are processed in the system (say 12 Aadhaars get generated every second) happens on a first-come-first-serve basis – sort of like getting the next available token when you walk into a bank.
Why We Need the Aadhar Card?
Earlier We have seen the Benefits and Advantages of Having Aadhar Card. Aadhar Card or e–aadhar Card is IMP ID Proof like PAN card, PASSPORT, Driving Licence and Voter ID card etc.
The fact is YOU DON’T NEED AADHAR CARD. IT’S NOT COMPULSORY BUT IT’S SURELY BENEFICIAL TO HAVE ONE.
In Starting Phase The Supreme court of India has already passed a statement that the Aadhar card can’t be made mandatory by any Center, State or any other Public entity. You don’t need the card even for availing government welfare schemes (But for Some Scheme Like LPG Subsidy, JHAN DHAN YOJANA Aadhar Card is Essential).
But the Importance of Having AadharNumber given by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) as a part of the Planning Commission that aims at centralizing identity maintenance and validation. The goal behind the Idea of Aadhar Number is to create one identity for all the essential services which enables an easier way to attain an individual’s identity.
It is for these reasons that you will still be needing an Aadhar card even though you have a Passport / Driving License / Voter ID Card / PAN card to prove your identity.
The Purpose of Aadhar Card?
“The Main Purpose of the UID project is simple, it is to give every Indian resident a unique number(that’s UID Number), preventing the kinds of duplication that currently exists. The complexity of the issue lies in ensuring that everybody in a population of 1.25 billion gets a unique number, and therein lies an enormous challenge of scale and technology. But issuing a unique number is just one part of the challenge. The other part is making sure that this number is used effectively. For this purpose, the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) is providing an online authentication capability. In such a scenario, we will be able to verify online anyone claiming to be Mr. ABC with the unique number 456 as actually being that person. This combination of de-duplication and having unique numbers on one end, and the existence of online authentication at the other end is the core of the solution that the UIDAI is seeking to achieve.” – Nandan Nilekani, Chairman, UIDAI
